The 12th Street Colored YMCA team was one of the first dominant black basketball teams. They were crowned "Colored Basketball World's Champions" in 1910 and 1911 (the second time as the Howard University team or the Howard Big Five.) They were undefeated in 1909-10 and defeated school and club teams from Washington, DC to New York City. At the Manhattan Casino in 1910 they defeated Smart Set Athletic Club before 3,000 fans.
