- 1947 - (Right:) In the playoffs of the first season of the Basketball Association of America, the Chicago Stags upset the Washington Capitols, four games to two in the league semi-finals. The upset comes after Coach Red Auerbach's Caps dominated the league, the forerunner of the NBA, during the regular season.
- 1962 - Elgin Baylor of the Los Angeles Lakers scores 62 points, breaking Bob Pettit's record of 50 points in an NBA Finals game. The Lakers win the game against the Boston Celtics, 126-121, but lose the series, four games to three.
- 1963 - Cynthia Cooper, one of the greatest women basketball players of all time, is born in Chicago, Illinois.
- 1976 - WNBA star Anna DeForge of the Indiana Fever is born in Iron Mountain, Michigan.
- 1985 - Mark Eaton of the Utah Jazz concludes the 1984-85 season with 456 blocked shots, for an average of 5.56 BPG, both NBA records.
- 1990 - Chris Dudley of the New Jersey Nets goes to the foul line and misses 17 of 18 free throws. His 0-for-13 start remains the NBA record for consecutive misses from the charity stripe.
- 2003 - Roy Williams is hired to replace Matt Doherty as men's basketball head coach at the University of North Carolina. Williams spent fifteen seasons as the Kansas head coach and ten years as an assistant coach at North Carolina under Dean Smith.
