- 1966 - The Boston Celtics win their eighth straight NBA title, the longest streak in league history.
- 1975 - Bill Russell, the center who led the San Francisco Dons to two NCAA titles and the Boston Celtics to eleven NBA titles, becomes the first African American player inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
- 1990 - The Boston Celtics defeat the New York Knicks, 157-128, setting the NBA record for most points scored in a playoff game. The Celtics shoot .670 from the field (63-of-94 FG attempts), setting another playoff mark.
- 1993 - Jim Valvano, coach of the 1983 national champion North Carolina State Wolfpack passes away from of metastatic cancer. Before he dies he founds The V Foundation for Cancer Research, an organization dedicated to finding a cure for cancer.
