- 1896 - (Right) The first women's inter-collegiate basketball game is played at San Francisco's Page Street Armory. Stanford and Cal meet in a game that does not at all resemble the fast-paced and physical game the UConn and Tennessee women play today. Rules were adjusted to make sure the ladies stayed ladylike, as each player is confined to one of three areas. Stealing the ball is not permitted. Stanford wins, 2 (baskets) to 1.
- 1970 - Madagascar becomes the first sub-Saharan country to win the FIBA Africa Championship for Women, beating two-time defending champ Egypt, 44-36.
- 1983 - Lorenzo Charles dunks Dereck Whittenburg's errant shot at the buzzer, giving upstart N.C. State a 54-52 win over mighty Houston in the NCAA Championship game.
- 1988 - Kansas, led by Player of the Year Danny Manning and Coach of the Year Larry Brown, defeat Oklahoma, 83-79, to win the first Jayhawk national championship since Phog Allen's 1952 squad.
- 1989 - Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's plays in his last NBA regular-season game when the Los Angeles Lakers visit the Seattle SuperSonics.
- 1994 - Arkansas's Scotty Thurman delivers on a three-pointer with the shot clock running out with 50 seconds left in the game and the Razorbacks hold on to beat Duke, 76-72, and win the NCAA title.
- 1997 - Utah’s Karl Malone becomes the first NBA player to reach the 2,000-point plateau in 10 consecutive seasons, in the Jazz's 106-79 victory against the Vancouver Grizzlies.
- 2005 - Roy Williams sheds his title as "most successful coach never to have won an NCAA ring" as his Tar Heels defeat the University of Illinois, 75-70, in the 2005 NCAA Championship game.
- 2007 - Radio host Don Imus makes offensive comments about the Rutgers University women's basketball that begins a national uproar and culminates with Imus losing his show, despite his apologies.
