- 1902 - Hall of Fame coach Red Holzman is born in Brooklyn, New York.
- 1970 - Joe Lapchick, Hall of Fame center for the Original Celtics, coach for St. John's and the Knicks coach, and a crusader for racial equality, dies at age 70.
- 1984 - The US Men defeat Spain, 96-65, to win the gold medal at the Soviet-boycotted Los Angeles Olympics. Michael Jordan leads the American team in scoring, averaging 17.1 ppg. The US Women win the gold, beating South Korea, 85-55, in a tournament without challenge for the Americans. Cheryl Miller, averaging 16.5 ppg, led the team in scoring, rebounding, steals and assists.
- 2006 - Diana Taurasi (right) scores a league-record 47 points in the Phoenix Mercury's triple-overtime win over the Houston Comets.
