- 1932 - Red Kerr, who rarely missed a game in 12 NBA seasons, is born in Chicago, Illinois. He played for the Syracuse Nationals for most of his career, and coached the Chicago Bulls and Phoenix Suns.
- 1986 - The United States runs over the Soviet Union, 108-88, to win the FIBA World Championship for Women in Moscow. All five starters finish in double figures. Cheryl Miller (right) leads all scorers with 24 points and 15 rebounds. Teresa Edwards adds 17 points, Anne Donovan scores 16.
- 2005 - The Metropolitan Intercollegiate Basketball Association (consisting of Fordham, Manhattan, St. John's, Wagner and NYU) agrees to a settlement in their lawsuit against the NCAA over the National Invitation Tournament (NIT). The NCAA agrees to purchase the preseason and postseason NIT for $40.5 million and pay $16 million to end the suit.
- 2007 - Talented and deeply troubled Eddie Griffin dies in a fiery car crash in Houston at the age of 25.
