• 1956 - Journeyman NBA swing-man John Long is born in Romulus, Michigan.

• 1979 - NCAA Champion, WNBA Champion, and Olympic gold medalist Ruth Riley is born in Ransom, Kansas.

• 1982 - The Soviet Union squeaks past the USA, 95-94, in the gold medal game of the FIBA World Championship.

• 2004 - At the Athens Olympics, Argentina wins its first ever Olympic gold medal in men's basketball and becomes the first country other than the United States to win the gold medal since 1988, by defeating Italy, 84-69. Luis Alberto Scola leads all scorers with 25 points. On the women's side, Team USA sweeps through, beating Australia in the gold medal game, 74-63, as they meet in the finals for the second consecutive Olympics. Lisa Leslie (above) leads the way again, averaging 15.6 ppg and 8.0 rpg.
