- 1949 - Six surviving teams from the Midwest-based National Basketball League (right) join the Basketball Association of America. The resulting 17-team league is renamed the National Basketball Association, with Maurice Podoloff as president. At the same time, the BAA's Indianapolis Jets and Providence Steamrollers fold.
- 1975 - Star high school and college player and game-fixer Jack Molinas is murdered in Los Angeles, California.
- 1992 - Team USA sets a women's team scoring record in the Olympics, as they defeat Spain in pool play, 114-59.
- 1996 - The US Men handle a strong Yugoslavia team, 95-69, in the gold medal game of the Atlanta Olympics. David Robinson leads the US with 28 points and seven rebounds in the finals. The US Women also take home gold, going undefeated and handing Brazil their only loss, in the finals, 111-87. The U.S. shot a USA single game Olympic record 66.2% from the field for the game.
- 2003 - The USA wins the first-ever FIBA World Championship under 21 for Women, defeating Brazil, 71-55.
- 2005 - The largest trade in NBA history comes off, featuring 13 players, including Antoine Walker, Eddie Jones and Jason Williams, and involving the Miami Heat, Memphis Grizzlies, Utah Jazz and New Orleans Hornets.
