- 1907 - Charles "Tarzan" Cooper, Hall of Fame center for the Renaissance Five for 11 years, is born in Newark, Delaware.
- 1917 - William "Pop" Gates, the Hall of Famer who was a prolific scorer for the the Renaissance Five and the first black player in the National Basketball League, is born in Decatur, Alabama.
- 1953 - Hall of Fame center Robert Parish is born in Shreveport, Louisiana. He will spend 21 NBA seasons pulling down rebounds and swatting away shots.
- 1979 - Ann Meyers (right), four-time All-America at UCLA, signs a one-year, $50,000 contract with the NBA's Indiana Pacers. Meyers tries out, but does not make the team.
- 1997 - The Houston Comets defeat the New York Liberty, 65-51, to become the first WNBA Champions, Regular-season MVP Cynthia Cooper, the leading scorer with 25 points, was named the Finals MVP.
- 2007 - Becky Hammon of the San Antonio Silver Stars sets a WNBA playoff record with 16 3-point field goal attempts and ties a playoff record by making seven of them. Despite her 32-point performance, the Phoenix Mercury prevail, 102-100 in Game 1 of the Western Conference finals.
