- 1954 - All-American player, college, WNBA and Olympics coach Susan Yow is born in Gibsonville, North Carolina.
- 1962 - NBA All-Star center Patrick Ewing is born in Kingston, Jamaica.
- 1976 - (Right) Four former American Basketball Association teams -- San Antonio, Denver, New York and Indiana -- are officially admitted into the National Basketball Association, raising the league to 22 teams. San Antonio is the only former ABA club ever to win an NBA Championship, which they have done four times.
- 2005 - Legendary Los Angeles Lakers broadcaster Chick Hearn, who called 3,338 consecutive Lakers games, died at the age of 83.
- 2007 - Iran defeats Lebanon, 74-69, to win its first ever FIBA Asia Championship and qualify for the 2008 Olympics. Hamed Ehadadi, Iran's 7'2" center, leads all scorers with 31 points.
