- 1897 - Leonard Sachs, Basketball Hall of Fame coach who would have a 224-129 record from 1925 through 1942 at Loyola of Chicago, is born in Chicago.
- 1948 - "Downtown" Freddie Brown is born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
- 1974 - Bill Garrett, who integrated the Big Ten as player at Indiana University and won a state high school title as a coach at Indianapolis Crispus Attucks High School, passes away form a heart attack at age 45.
- 1996 - Val Ackerman (right) is named first President of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA).
- 1999 - Philadelphia basketball legend Harry Litwack, who coached the Temple Owls to a 373-189 record in 21 seasons, dies at age 91.
- 2006 - The US Senior National Team plays in China for the first time. They defeat an injury-depleted China team, 119-73. LeBron James leads the US with 22 points; Yi Jianlian scores 14 and grabs 9 rebounds for China.
