Bob Thornton

Bob Thornton enters his second season with the Timberwolves. An eight-year NBA veteran, Thornton was an assistant coach for the Chicago Bulls in 2002-03 and spent the 2003-04 season as an assistant coach and then a scout for the Bulls.
Prior to joining the Bulls, Thornton was head coach of the NBDL’s Huntsville Flight in 2001-02. In 2000-01, Thornton was head coach of the CBA’s Quad City Thunder. He was an assistant coach for the CBA Champion Yakima Sun Kings in 1999-2000. He spent two years as an assistant coach at the collegiate level, with Cal State Fullerton in 1988-89 and Chapman University in 1997-98.
A fourth round selection (87th overall) by the New York Knicks in 1984, Thornton played for five NBA teams: New York, Philadelphia, Minnesota, Utah and Washington. He averaged 3.0 points and 2.5 rebounds per game in his career. The Timberwolves acquired Thornton from Philadelphia on Nov. 10, 1990. He played in 12 games for the Wolves before breaking his wrist and missing the remainder of the season. He averaged 1.3 points and 1.3 rebounds per game for the Wolves. Thornton also played three seasons in the A-1 Italian Basketball League for Rome, Siena and Pavia.
A native of Los Angeles, Thornton earned a bachelor's degree in social science from the University of California-Irvine. Over his four-year collegiate career, he averaged 8.7 ppg and 5.7 rpg for the Anteaters.
