Brandon Roy

Brandon Roy (born July 23, 1984 in Seattle, Washington) plays with the Portland Trail Blazers of the National Basketball Association. Roy attended Garfield High School in Seattle before playing at the University of Washington for four years.

Roy was originally an early entry candidate for the 2002 NBA Draft straight out of Garfield High School but took his name out before the draft to attend the University of Washington.

Roy was instrumental in rebuilding the Huskies basketball program under Coach Lorenzo Romar. He played three productive seasons followed by a breakout senior year during which he averaged 20.2 points per game and led the Huskies to a 26–7 season and Sweet Sixteen appearance. Roy was named Pac-10 player of the year and received All-American honors at the end of the season. He was selected by the Minnesota Timberwolves 6th overall in the 2006 NBA Draft but his draft rights were then traded to the Portland Trail Blazers in exchange for the draft rights to 7th overall pick Randy Foye and cash.

2006-07: Rookie Year

His NBA career got off to a fast start in the Toshiba Vegas Summer League in July, 2006 as he averaged 19 points per game on 65% shooting and was named to the all-league first team. His 35 points against the Phoenix Suns on July 12 were the most by any player in a summer league game.

He averaged rookie highs of 16.8 points, 4.0 assists and 35.4 minutes in 57 games. Roy also ranked among rookie leaders in steals (1.18 spg, 2nd), rebounds (4.4 rpg, 7th), free-throw percentage (.838, 3rd), three-point field goal percentage (.377, 6th), and field goal percentage (.456, 6th).

Roy scored at least 20 points 16 times, including a career-high 29 vs. Utah on April 4, and he led the team in scoring in seven of his final 10 games of the season. Roy twice had three consecutive games of at least 20 points (March 22-25 and Mar. 31-Apr. 6). His 20-point performance opening night (Nov. 1, 2006) at Seattle ranks third all-time for a Portland rookie playing in his first NBA game. The only other Portland rookies to score more points on opening night were Mychal Thompson (23 points) and Geoff Petrie (21 points).

Roy was selected by NBA assistant coaches to the rookie squad for the 2007 All-Star Weekend rookie-sophomore game held at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. Later in the season, Roy received the Eddie Gottlieb Trophy when he was selected the 2006-2007 NBA Rookie of the Year award, receiving 127 of 128 first place votes.

His girlfriend, Tiana Bardwell, delivered their first child, Brandon Jr., on March 27, 2007 in Seattle.
