While the ABA had a significant impact on professional basketball, one league that sought major status but fell considerably short of that goal was the second edition of the American Basketball League. The brainchild of Abe Saperstein, founder of the Harlem Globetrotters, the ABL was founded in 1961 in Chicago because Saperstein was convinced that professional basketball was ready for something new.
