- 1915 - Hall of Famer Phil Woolpert, who coached the San Francisco Dons to the 1955 and 1956 NCAA championships, is born in Danville, Kentucky.
- 1927 - Earl Strom, considered by many to be the greatest referee in NBA history, is born in Pottstown, Pennsylvania.
- 1948 - (Right) Charlie Scott, the first African American scholarship athlete at the University of North Carolina and veteran of two ABA and three NBA All-Star games, is born in New York City.
- 1973 - Tennessee beats Temple, 11-6, in the lowest scoring NCAA Division I men's game since 1938. Temple's stall strategy failed, but the NCAA did not adopt the shot clock until 1985.
- 1999 - The Indiana Fever selects Gordana Grubin from the Los Angeles Sparks with their first pick of the 1999 Expansion Draft.
- 2003 - For the first time, Sports Illustrated chooses two basketball players to honor as Sportsmen of the Year: Teammates Tim Duncan and David Robinson of the San Antonio Spurs.
