- 1927 - Ralph Beard (right), a star guard on Adolph Rupp's "Fabulous Five" University of Kentucky basketball team, is born in Hardinsburg, Kentucky.
- 1954 - Frank Selvy of the Milwaukee Hawks hits 24 of 26 free throws in a game against the Minneapolis Lakers, setting NBA rookie records for free throws attempted and made in a game.
- 1983 - Basketball Hall of Fame coach Bruce Drake, coach who had exactly 200 wins at the University of Oklahoma, passes away at age 77.
- 1986 - The Washington Bullets beat the Boston Celtics, 117-109, to end the Celtics’ homecourt winning streak at 38 games. Although the game is played at the Hartford Civic Center instead of the Boston Garden, it still counts as a home contest for the Celtics.
- 1997 - The Washington Wizards begin a new era when they open the doors to the $260 million downtown MCI Center in a match up against the Seattle SuperSonics.
- 2006 - Lincoln University (PA) punishes Ohio State-Merion, 201-78, setting NCAA Division III records for points scored, and margin of victory in the process. Also, Sami Wylie set a D-III record with his 21 three-pointers.
