- 1941 - Nolan Richardson, who guided the Arkansas Razorbacks to the 1994 NCAA Division I Men's Tournament championship, is born in El Paso, Texas.
- 1954 - Kent Benson, center on the 1976 Indiana Hoosiers, the last undefeated team to win the NCAA Division I Men's Tournament championship, is born in New Castle, Indiana.
- 1962 - Mark Few, coach of the Gonzaga Bulldogs, is born in Creswell, Oregon.
- 1967 - William (Red) Holzman is named head coach of the New York Knicks to succeed Dick McGuire. Shaping a young team with the likes of Willis Reed, Walt Frazier, Bill Bradley and Dave DeBusschere, Holzman turned the franchise around and won two NBA titles and three conference championships before retiring in 1982.
- 1984 - WNBA player Tye'sha Fluker of the Seattle Storm, is born.
- 1991 - Tim Hardaway of the Golden State Warriors shoots 0-for-17, setting a new NBA record for the most field goals attempted with none made. The previous record holder, Howie Dallmar, also played for the Warrior franchise, when they were the Philadelphia Warriors.
- 2006 - Richard "Rip" Hamilton scores a career-high 51 points with a personal best 19 of 37 field goal shooting in a 151-145 triple-overtime Detroit Pistons loss to the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden.
