- 1950 - Dolph Schayes of the Syracuse Nationals pulls down 35 rebounds, at the time an NBA record in the new statistical category, in a game at Philadelphia against the Warriors.
- 1954 - Philadelphia's Overbrook High School loses to Farrell High School, 59-58. It is the only loss in the 1953-54 and 1954-55 seasons for Overbrook and their star center, Wilt Chamberlain.
- 1962 - NBA and Memphis State star Keith Lee is born in in West Memphis, Arkansas.
- 1974 - Los Angeles Lakers center Elmore Smith goes to the line with a 3-to-make-2 free throw situation. Smith misses all three shots, all of them air balls.
- 1982 - (Above) United States Patent No. 4,365,802 is issued to Arthur Ehrat. Mr. Ehrat called the device "The Rebounder;" its technical name is a "Deformation-preventing swingable mount for basketball goals." Today it is commonly called a breakaway goal.
