- 1934 - 16,188 spectators crowd Madison Square Garden to watch the first inter-sectional college basketball doubleheader, with NYU defeating Notre Dame, 25-18, and little Westminster College (PA) upsetting mighty St. John's, 37-33. For the next 20 years these double-headers would be a staple of the college basketball scene in New York and other cities.
- 1961 - Wilt Chamberlain of the Philadelphia Warriors scores 60 points in a 123-118 win over the Los Angeles Lakers. It is the seventh straight game in which he scores 50 or more points.
- 1971 - Mel Daniels of the Indiana Pacers pulls down a team-record 26 defensive rebounds against the Miami Floridians.
- 1997 - Bubba Wells (right) of the Dallas Mavericks sets a new NBA record by fouling out in only three minutes against the Chicago Bulls. The fouls were part of Coach Don Nelson's startegy to foul Dennis Rodman, a poor free-throw shooter, thereby keeping the ball out of the hands of Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen. Rodman shoots 9-for-12 from the free throw line and the Bulls win. Despite this setback the strategy survives, and comes to be known as Hack-a-Shaq.
