  • 1865 - Dr. Luther Gulick, the physical education instructor who asked Dr. James Naismith to invent an indoor sport, is born in Honolulu, Hawaii. Gulick worked to popularize the sport (then called "basket ball," and was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1959.

  • 1997 - The NBA suspends Golden State's Latrell Sprewell for the remainder of the season for attacking P. J. Carlesimo, his coach. The 68-game suspension will cost Sprewell $6.4 million. As a result of his actions and the suspension, Sprewell will lose his endorsement deal with Converse.
