• 1865 - Dr. Luther Gulick, the physical education instructor who asked Dr. James Naismith to invent an indoor sport, is born in Honolulu, Hawaii. Gulick worked to popularize the sport (then called "basket ball," and was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1959.

• 1956 - Four-time NBA All-Star Bernard King is born in Brooklyn, New York.

• 1987 - Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (right) of the Los Angeles Lakers manages only seven points in a game against the Milwaukee Bucks, thus ending his NBA-record streak of scoring in double digits in 787 consecutive NBA games.

• 1997 - The NBA suspends Golden State's Latrell Sprewell for the remainder of the season for attacking P. J. Carlesimo, his coach. The 68-game suspension will cost Sprewell $6.4 million. As a result of his actions and the suspension, Sprewell will lose his endorsement deal with Converse.
