- 1925 - Max "The Touch" Zaslofsky (right) is born in Brooklyn, New York. Zaslofsky was one of the most prolific scorers (he led the league in the 1947-48 season) in the Basketball Association of America, the forerunner to the NBA.
- 1949 - The Indianapolis Jets beat the Washington Capitols, 94-78, snapping the Capitols’ NBA-record streak at 15 consecutive games won at the start of the season. That mark was tied in 1993 by the Houston Rockets.
- 1956 - Indiana State and Celtics legend Larry Bird is born in West Baden, Indiana.
- 1963 - The Kansas Jayhawks, coached by Dick Tarp and led by George Unseld and Walt Wesley, snap the University of Cincinnati's 90-game home winning streak, 51-47, at Armory Fieldhouse. The streak, attributable mostly to the brilliance of Oscar Robertson, Paul Hogue and Coach Ed Jucker, dated to March 1957.
- 1980 - Ed Hickey, a Hall of Fame college coach who won two National Invitation Tournament (NIT) championships at two different colleges, passes away at age 77.
- 1982 - The Utah Jazz, in a 137-121 loss at Portland, set an NBA record for free throw percentage in a game, connecting on all 39 of their attempts from the line.
- 1983 - The Detroit Pistons defeat the Nuggets, 186-184, in triple overtime in Denver to establish a record for most points scored by two teams. Ironically, only two three pointers were made in the game.
- 1993 - What a difference ten years can make. The Orlando Magic establish an NBA record by holding the visiting Detroit Pistons to only six points in the fourth quarter of a 91-89 victory.
