- 1933 - "Jumpin' Johnny" Green, fourteen year NBA veteran and four-time NBA All-Star, is born in Dayton, Ohio.
- 1942 - A favorite of Chicago Bulls fans, Bob "Butterbean" Love is born in Bastrop, Louisiana.
- 1961 - Wilt Chamberlain of the Philadelphia Warriors scores 78 points and Elgin Baylor of the Los Angeles Lakers hits for 63, as Philadelphia wins in triple overtime at home, 151-147. Chamberlain breaks the NBA single-game scoring mark of 71 points set by Baylor the previous year.
- 1961 - Larry Costello of the Syracuse Nationals scores 32 straight points without missing -- 13 field goals and six free throws -- as Syracuse loses, 123-111, to Boston.
- 1992 - Dominique Wilkins of the Atlanta Hawks sets an NBA record, making 23 free throws without a miss against the Chicago Bulls.
- 1996 - Debbie Black of the ABL Colorado Xplosion pulls off a rare feat: a quadruple double. In a game against the Atlanta Glory, Black tallies 10 points, 14 rebounds, 12 assists and 10 steals.
- 1998 - The NBA announces the cancellation of the 1999 NBA All-Star Weekend, including the 49th annual NBA All-Star Game scheduled for Feb. 14 at the First Union Center in Philadelphia. This is the first time that the annual event had been cancelled. The cancellation was due to a labor dispute between the NBA and the NBA Players Association.
- 2000 - Shaquille O'Neal of the Los Angeles Lakers breaks a 40-year-old NBA record when he misses all 11 of his free throw attempts against Seattle. Wilt Chamberlain missed all 10 of his free throw attempts against Detroit on November 4, 1960.
