Don Nelson, the second-winningest coach in NBA history, was named head coach of the Golden State Warriors on August 30, 2006, becoming the 23rd head coach in team history.

Nelson, 66, enters the 2006-07 campaign owning a career regular-season coaching record of 1,190-880 (.575), trailing only Lenny Wilkens (1,323) on the all-time coaching wins list. His 2,070 games as a head coach trails only Wilkens (2,487), while his .575 winning percentage ranks 20th all-time among NBA skippers.
