• 1944 - Dick Snyder, a twelve-year journeyman in the NBA, is born in North Canton, Ohio.

• 1967 - (Right) Sports promoter Dennis Murphy announces the formation of the American Basketball Association (ABA) at a press conference at the Carlyle Hotel in New York. George Mikan is named commissioner of the new league, scheduled to begin play in October 1967.

• 1984 - David J. Stern succeeds Larry O'Brien and becomes the fourth commissioner of the NBA.

• 1984 - Bernard King scores 50 points for the Knicks at Dallas, equaling the 50 he tallied the night before (January 31, 1984) in San Antonio. King was the first player to score 50 points on consecutive nights since Wilt Chamberlain did it 20 years earlier.

• 1995 - John Stockton of the Utah Jazz became the NBA's all-time leader in assists with 9,922, surpassing the mark previously established by Magic Johnson.

• 2006 - Epiphanny Prince of Brooklyn's Murry Bergtraum High School breaks Cheryl Miller's 24-year-old girls' scholastic record, scoring 113 points in a game against Brandeis High School.
