- 1953 - Bill Chambers of William & Mary pulls down 51 rebounds in a game against Virginia, setting the NCAA Division I men's record.
- 1957 - Owner Fred Zollner announces that the Fort Wayne Pistons will move and begin play in the 1957-58 NBA season as the Detroit Pistons.
- 1966 - Wilt Chamberlain scores 41 points in a 149-123 Philadelphia win over Detroit to pass Bob Pettit (20,880 points), to become the NBA’s all-time scoring leader, a distinction he held for more than 18 years until passed by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in 1984.
- 1971 - Gheorghe Muresan, at 7'7" perhaps the tallest player in NBA history, is born in Triteni, Romania.
- 1975 - In one of the longest and highest-scoring games in ABA history, the San Diego Conquistadors defeat the New York Nets, 176-166, in four overtimes. The game features a career-high 63 points from the Nets’ Julius Erving, who set an ABA scoring record on 25-for-46 shooting from the field.
- 1978 - Richard "Rip" Hamilton, who led UConn to the 1999 NCAA Division I Men's Tournament championship, is born in Coatesville, Pennsylvania.
- 1981 - Kara Lawson, WNBA star and ESPN broadcaster, is born in Alexandria, Virginia.
- 1987 - A new single-game attendance record is set 57,745 fans gather at the Pontiac Silverdome to watch the Detroit Pistons defeat the Philadelphia 76ers 125-107. The record lasted less than a year, however, with the Pistons breaking it at the Silverdome once again, drawing 61,983 for a game against Boston on January 29, 1988.
