- 1959 - Kelly Tripucka, veteran of two NBA All-Star Games, is born in Bloomfield, New Jersey.
- 1966 - (Right:) Rick Mount of Lebanon (Indiana) High School becomes the first high school player to be featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated
- 1972 - Wilt Chamberlain of the Los Angeles Lakers becomes the first player in NBA history to reach the 30,000 point mark for his career during a 110-109 loss to the Phoenix Suns. Chamberlain also passes Bill Russell during the 1971-72 season to become the NBA’s all-time leading rebounder. At the time, no other NBA player had scored 25,000 points, and only five had topped the 20,000 mark.
- 1973 - The Baltimore Bullets announce that they will be moving to Washington the following season.
- 1985 - The Detroit Pistons set a single-game NBA attendance record when 43,816 fans gather in Pontiac Silverdome to watch the Pistons take on the Philadelphia 76ers.
- 1987 - Cindy Brown of the Long Beach State 49ers sets an NCAA Division I Women's single-game scoring record, as she tallies 60 points against the San Diego State Aztecs. The 49ers' 149-69 victory sets an NCAA record for team points scored in a single game.
- 1992 - The L.A. Lakers officially retire Magic Johnson's No. 32 jersey at halftime of the Celtics-Lakers game at the Great Western Forum. Johnson becomes the fifth Lakers player to have his jersey retired, joining Jerry West, Elgin Baylor, Wilt Chamberlain and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
