- 1932 - Hall of Fame player Ed "Moose" Krause is born in Chicago, Illinois. He will contribute to strengthening the the sport of basketball at Notre Dame and in his parents' homeland, Lithuania.
- 1954 - Bevo Francis (right) scores 113 points, as his Rio Grande College steamrolls Hillsdale College, 134-91. Francis sets college records for most field goals (38) and most free throws (37) in that game, as well as most points.
- 1967 - The American Basketball Association grants franchises to Anaheim (Amigos), Dallas (Chaparrals), Houston (Mavericks), Indiana (Pacers), Kansas City (before the first game is played they become the Denver Rockets), Minnesota (Muskies), New York (unable to find a suitable venue, they become the Americans; they are soon renamed the Nets, however), New Orleans (Buccaneers), Oakland (Oaks), and Pittsburgh (Pipers).
- 1968 - University of Arizona and San Antonio Spurs star Sean Elliott is born in Tucson, Arizona.
- 1993 - Dominique Wilkins scores 34 points to help the Atlanta Hawks defeat Seattle, 118-109, becoming the Hawks' all-time leading scorer with 20,885 points and surpassing Hall of Famer Bob Pettit, who previously held the franchise scoring record.
- 1994 - Atlanta’s Lenny Wilkens becomes only the second coach (after Red Auerbach) in NBA history to win 900 career games, after leading the Hawks to a 118-99 win over visiting Orlando.
- 1996 - Chicago's 99-84 road win over the Lakers marks the first meeting on the court between Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson since Game 5 of the 1995 Playoffs.
