- 1952 - Tom Burleson, the tallest Olympian ever (7'4"), as a member of the 1972 silver medal USA basketball team, is born in Crossnore, North Carolina.
- 1967 - Wilt Chamberlain of the Philadelphia 76ers shoots 18-for-18 from the field against the Baltimore Bullets, an NBA record for field goals in a game without a miss.
- 1978 - Kevin Porter of the New Jersey Nets dishes out 29 assists to set an NBA record. The record lasted until 1990, when it was broken by Scott Skiles.
- 1987 - Kareem Abdul-Jabbar of the Los Angeles Lakers nets his first three-point shot. The leading scorer in NBA history had reached the 36,000-point plateau without scoring on a three pointer.
