- 1895 - Lew Andreas, coach of the 1926 national champion Syracuse Orangemen, is born in Sterling, Illinois.
- 1977 - (Right) "Pistol" "Pistol" Pete Maravich scores a career-high 68 points, setting the NBA record for scoring by a guard. That record would be eclipsed by Michael Jordan in 1990.
- 1986 - Micheal Ray Richardson of the New Jersey Nets receives a lifetime ban from the NBA for violating the league's drug policy.
- 1998 - Bill Fitch of the Los Angeles Clippers passes Red Auerbach (938) to become at the time the second-winningest coach in NBA history with a 117-108 win over Philadelphia.
