- 1977 - (Right) Edwin Henderson, the "Father of Black Basketball," and organizer of the 12th Street YMCA team that won the 1910 Black Basketball World Championship, passes away at the age of 93.
- 1980 - Boston Celtics rookie Larry Bird scores the first three-pointer in NBA All-Star Game history, hitting from the corner in the East’s 144-136 overtime victory at the Capital Centre.
