- 1929 - Hall of Fame forward Neil Johnston (right), who led the NBA in scoring three years in a row, is born in Chillicothe, Ohio.
- 1961 - As a snowstorm envelopes New York City, the New York Knicks nevertheless meet the St. Louis Hawks in Madison Square Garden. A crowd of 943 brave souls watches the Hawks dismantle the Knicks, 128-111. Rookie Lenny Wilkens and superstar Bob Pettit lead the Hawks in scoring and veteran Clyde Lovellette scores his 10,000th NBA point. Millions of snow-bound New Yorkers do get a chance to see it, however, as the local television blackout is lifted at the last minute.
- 1987 - The Sacramento Kings score only 4 points in the first quarter against the Los Angeles Lakers, establishing an NBA record for fewest points in a period since introduction of the 24 second shot-clock in 1954.
- 1992 - In a special two-hour ceremony celebrating his storied playing career, Larry Bird's No. 33 Celtics jersey is retired at sold-out Boston Garden.
