- 1925 - In New Jersey Hackensack Hill High School beats Passaic High, 39-34, ending the 159-game winning streak of the Passaic "Wonder Teams." Passaic is coached by one of the first legends of basketball coaching, Hall of Famer Ernest Blood. It is believed to be the longest winning streak in basketball history.
- 1970 - The NBA grants franchises to Buffalo, Cleveland and Portland. The Buffalo Braves (above) later move to San Diego, then Los Angeles and change their name to the Clippers.
- 1988 - Larry Bird wins his third consecutive AT&T Long Distance Shootout in memorable fashion, leaving the Chicago Stadium floor with his right index finger extended flashing the No. 1 sign. Michael Jordan wins his second consecutive Nestle Crunch Slam Dunk contest netting a perfect score of 50 on his final dunk to squeak past Dominique Wilkins.
- 2008 - In a stunning, blockbuster deal, the Phoenix Suns acquire Shaquille O'Neal, sending four-time NBA All-Star Shawn Marion and Marcus Banks to the Miami Heat.
