Frank Lubin

Frank John Lubin (Lithuanian: Pranas Lubinas; January 7, 1910 – July 8, 1999) was an American basketball player. Lubin was born on the East side of Los Angeles, California to a family of Lithuanian immigrants. He graduated from Lincoln High School in Los Angeles in 1927. The 6'7" center played at UCLA, graduating in 1931 and then played AAU basketball for almost 30 years.

At UCLA Lubin played for Coach Pierce "Caddy" Works, and was named all-conference in his senior season.

Lubin became an Olympic gold medalist in 1936, when he played on the US team in Berlin, the first time basketball was included in the Olympics. (His Olympic team included former Bruins and Universal Pictures teammates Sam Balter, Carl Knowles, Don Piper and Carl Shy.) He became a European champion with the Lithuanian team in 1939 in Kaunas. He is often called the "Grandfather of Lithuanian basketball" as he promoted basketball in Lithuania and helped Lithuania win its two consecutive European championships.

A key member of the 20th Century Fox team, Lubin helped to win the 1941 AAU championship. His Universal Pictures squad was the AAU runner-up in 1936. In 1941 and 1945 Lubin was named to the AAU All-American Teams.

Lubin was inducted into the Helms Foundation Hall of Fame as the best amateur player in Southern California for the first half of the 20th century. In 1997 he was inducted into the UCLA Hall of Fame.
