Franchise Name History
When Philadelphia became a charter member of the Basketball Association of America (BAA), the forerunner of the National Basketball Association, in 1946, one of the first tasks of the team officials was to name the new club. It was decided to name the team after the original Philadelphia basketball team -- the Warriors -- who began play in the American Basketball League in 1925 under Coach Eddie Baker.
After 17 seasons in Philadelphia, the Warriors moved to San Francisco. The team made their new home in Oakland in 1971. In an attempt to get the whole state of California involved with the team, team officials named the club the Golden State Warriors.
