Howard Cann

Howard G. Cann (October 11, 1895 in Bridgeport, Connecticut, United States - December 18, 1992) was a college men's basketball player and coach. He is known for coaching at New York University from 1923 to 1958, compiling a 409-232 record.
Cann began his playing career at New York's High School of Commerce, where Commerce won the vaunted Public School Athletic League championship. Cann (along with his former high school teammate Nat Holman) led NYU to the AAU National Championship in 1920. Cann was also named Helms Athletic Foundation Player of the Year in 1920.
As a coach, he led NYU to an undefeated season in 1933-34, the Helms Foundation mythical national championship in 1934-35, and the NCAA Championship Game in 1945. Under his leadership NYU won the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) Championship in 1948. He was named National Coach of the Year in 1947. It was his NYU team that faced Notre Dame on December 29, 1934 in the first college game ever played at Madison Square Garden.
Cann was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1968 as a coach. He is also a member of the NYU Athletics Hall of Fame.
