- 1960 - Georgi Glouchkov, the first Eastern European player in the NBA, is born in Tryavna, Bulgaria.
- 1979 - Daryl Moreau of De La Salle High School in New Orleans sets the U.S. high school record by sinking his 126th consecutive free throw over two seasons. In 1978-79 he had set the national single-season percentage standard of 97.5% from the line (119 of 122).
- 1985 - Hall of Famer Lenny Wilkens (above) becomes the first person to coach in 1,000 NBA games when the Seattle SuperSonics defeat the Golden State Warriors 89-86.
- 2003 - The NBA announces that Charlotte, North Carolina has been awarded NBA and WNBA expansion franchises. The NBA team would be known as the Charlotte Bobcats and the WNBA team as the Charlotte Sting.
- 2008 - St. Louis University sets a new modern-day NCAA Division I Men's record, scoring only 20 points in a 49-20 loss to George Washington. The Billikens surpassed the old record of 21 points, held by Coastal Carolina and Princeton, for the fewest points scored since the advent of the shot clock in 1985.
