- 1932 - Hall of Famer John Chaney, former Temple University coach, is born in Jacksonville, Florida.
- 1954 - In one of the most exciting NBA All-Star games ever, Bob Cousy of the Boston Celtics steals the show, as he scores 10 of the East's 14 overtime points and dribbles out the clock for a 98-93 victory over the West at Madison Square Garden.
- 1958 - (Right) Bob Pettit of St. Louis becomes the first member of the losing team to win the NBA All-Star MVP award. The East beats the West, 130-118, but Pettit scores 28 points and grabs 26 rebounds in a losing effort.
- 1963 - Four-time All-NBA center Hakeem Olajuwon is born in Lagos, Nigeria.
- 1963 - Two-time NBA Sixth Man of the Year Detlef Schrempf is born in Leverkusen, Germany.
- 1990 - Gampel Pavilion, home to the Connecticut Huskies men's and women's basketball teams, officially opens.
- 1995 - John Stockton sends a bounce pass to set up Utah Jazz teammate Karl Malone's basket, making Stockton the NBA's all-time career leader in assists, with 9,922.
- 2006 -The North Carolina Tar Heels become only the second college basketball program to reach 1,900 wins in its history. The University of Kentucky is the only other school to reach this mark.
