- 1884 - (Right) Walter "Doc" Meanwell, Hall of Fame coach, is born in Leeds, England. He compiled a 290-101 record in college coaching, highlighted by leading the Wisconsin Badgers to three Helms Foundation National Championships (1912, 1914 and 1916).
- 1960 - In West Virginia Danny Heater sets the U.S. high school boys single-game scoring record with a 135 point effort, as Burnsville H.S. defeats Widen H.S., 173-43. His stat line: 53/70 FG, 29/41 FT, 32 Rebounds, 7 Assists. Many players don't have seasons that good.
- 1975 - Immaculata's Mighty Macs crush the Maryland Terrapins, 80-48, in the first nationally televised women's basketball game.
- 1977 - Vince Carter, who achieved international fame with his Dunk of Death, is born in Daytona Beach, Florida.
- 1982 - Cheryl Miller makes 46 of 50 field goal attempts on the way to 105 points, setting the high school girls' record. Her Riverside Poly squad defeats Riverside Norte Vista, 179-15. The record would stand until 2006, when it was broken by Epiphanny Prince with 113 points.
