- 1945 - Arkansas State loses to Kentucky, 45-6, thus setting the NCAA Division I men's record for fewest points scored.
- 1951 - The Washington Capitols, one of the stronger teams in the early years of the NBA, announce that they had been unable to find a buyer and that the club would fold after its January 9 game.
- 1955 - Georgia Tech upsets Kentucky, 59-58, snapping Kentucky's 32-game winning streak and 130-game home-winning streak (stretching over 12 years).
- 1962 - Jerry Lucas of Ohio State becomes the first basketball player to be named Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year.
- 1985 - The San Antonio Spurs, behind a near quadruple-double by guard Johnny Moore (right), beat Golden State, 139-94. Moore tallies 26 points, 13 assists, 11 rebounds and nine steals.
- 1997 - Hall of Famer Paul Endacott, who Kansas Jayhawks coach Phog Allen said was the the greatest guard he ever coached, passes away at age 94.
- 1999 - During a profanity-laced tirade, John Thompson, Jr. shocks the sports world by announcing his resignation as Georgetown University's head coach, citing marital problems.
- 2001 - WNBA great Cynthia Cooper is named head coach of the Phoenix Mercury.
- 2007 - The WNBA holds a dispersal draft for Charlotte Sting players.
