Johnny Moore

John Brian "Johnny" Moore (born March 3, 1958 in Altoona, Pennsylvania) is a retired American professional player in the NBA. He spent his entire career playing point guard for the San Antonio Spurs, save one game for the New Jersey Nets.
Moore attended Altoona Area High School in Altoona, Pennsylvania and the University of Texas. Moore led the Longhorns to the 1978 National Invitation Tournament (NIT) championship. He was team MVP in both 1978 and 1979. He holds the Longhorns record for assists in a game -- 19 -- which he did twice. He was drafted by the Seattle SuperSonics in the second round of the 1979 NBA Draft.
Over 520 games in his career, Moore averaged 9.4 points, 7.4 assists, 3.0 rebounds and 1.96 steals per game, and a field goal percentage of 46.0. He is currently 15th in the NBA in assists per game. Moore is the Spurs’ all-time assist leader with 3,685 assists. Moore had his best season as a Spur in 1984-85, when he averaged 12.8 points, 10.0 assists and 2.79 steals in 82 games. Perhaps is best game was on January 8, 1985, when he had a near quadruple-double (26 points, 13 assists, 11 rebounds and nine steals) and led the Spurs over the Golden State Warriors, 139-94.
Towards the end of his relatively short career, he was diagnosed with Valley fever, a fungal infection that can cause meningitis. It was thought that this malady would end his career, if not endanger his life. He made a full recovery, enough so to return to the Spurs to resume his career, albeit briefly.
After retiring from the Spurs, Moore coached St. Gerard Catholic High School in San Antonio for two seasons, leading them to the state finals twice and winning once.
In 1997-98 Moore played for Maccabi Carmiel in the Israeli Artzit League (Men's Division 3).
The Spurs honored Moore by retiring his number, #00. In 2003 he was elected to the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame.
