- 1926 - Tony Lavelli is born in Somerville, Massachusetts. Upon his graduation from Yale in 1949 he held the college career scoring record with 1,964 points. He was also widely known for his virtuoso accordion performance at halftime.
- 1960 - Rod Strickland is born in the Bronx, New York.
- 1996 - Kobe Bryant, a high school prodigy just drafted by the Charlotte Hornets, is traded to the Los Angeles Lakers for starting center Vlade Divac.
- 2003 - The first Native American Basketball Invitational (NABI) tips off at America West Arena in Phoenix. By 2007 the tournament has 48 boys teams and 40 girls teams participating and is the first Native American tournament to be officially certified by the NCAA.
