- 1904 - The Buffalo Germans (above) win the AAU tournament at the St. Louis Olympic Games. For the rest of their existence, the Germans will call themselves "Olympic Champions".
- 1968 - The ABA's New Jersey Americans move to Long Island, New York and are renamed the "New York Nets."
- 1989 - After averaging 4.7 points for the 1988-89 season with the Hawks, the Detroit Pistons sign center Jon Koncak to a 6-year, $13 million dollar offer sheet only to have Atlanta match the terms. Koncak will earn more per season than Magic Johnson, Larry Bird and Michael Jordan.
- 2002 - Lisa Leslie collects 18 points and 14 rebounds and comes up with two key blocks down the stretch as the Western Conference records its fourth straight win in the WNBA All-Star Game, 81-76, over the Eastern Conference. The leader of the reigning WNBA champion Los Angeles Sparks, Leslie is named All-Star Most Valuable Player for the third time. She made 6-of-13 shots from the field, 6-of-10 from the free-throw line and was credited with four blocked shots.
- 2006 - In the Wheelchair Basketball World Championship for Men Canada wins the gold medal, defeating the USA, 59-41. Patrick Anderson leads all scorers with 25 points.
- 2007 - At the WNBA All-Star game Cheryl Ford of the Detroit Shock tallies 16 points, 13 rebounds and five assists to lead the East to a 103-99 win over the West. For her efforts she is named game MVP.
