- 1968 - NBA All-Star guard Gary Payton -- The Glove -- is born in Oakland, California.
- 1998 - Jerry Reinsdorf, Chairman of the Chicago Bulls, tells surprised reporters that Iowa State coach Tim Floyd would become head coach of the Bulls if Phil Jackson, who resigned shortly after the Bulls won the NBA title, absolutely refuses to come back. Floyd resigns his Iowa State post a month later to take the job.
