- 1939 - Hall of Famer Walt Bellamy (right) is born in New Bern, North Carolina. He still holds an NBA record for having played in 88 regular-season games in one season.
- 1963 - Twelve-time NBA All-Star Karl Malone is born in Summerfield, Louisiana.
- 1998 - Team USA beats Australia in overtime, 93-85, to win the gold medal at the Goodwill Games. Andre Miller leads the scoring for the US with 18. It marks the first gold medal for an American amateur team in twelve years of international competition.
- 2005 - The USA U19 Women's team defeats Serbia & Montenegro in the gold medal game of the FIBA U19 World Championship, 97-76. Erlana Larkins (University of Maryland) paces the US, shooting 9 for 9 from the field and finishing with 20 points.
- 2007 - Lauren Jackson of the Seattle Storm scores 47 points against the Washington Mystics in a 97-96 overtime loss. She ties the single-game WNBA scoring record set by Diana Taurasi in a triple-overtime game on August 10, 2006.
