- 1941 - Hall of Fame center Nate Thurmond (above) is born in Akron, Ohio.
- 1988 - The Atlanta Hawks become the first NBA team to play the Soviet Union as they defeat the Soviet Georgia All-Stars 85-84 in an exhibition game.
- 1997 - Cynthia Cooper scores 44 points in a game against the Sacramento Monarchs. It set the WNBA single-game scoring record at the time, and remains the most points scored in a regulation-length WNBA game.
