- 1977 - The ABA New York Nets, originally the New Jersey Americans, return to New Jersey and become the New Jersey Nets.
- 1983 - Boston Celtics guard Delonte West is born in Washington, D.C.
- 1996 - Team USA (above) sets a new Olympics scoring record, as they cruise past China, 133-70, at the Atlanta Olympics.
- 1999 - Mark Few is named head coach at Gonzaga University.
- 2007 - Wake Forest Demon Deacons coach Skip Prosser suffers a massive heart attack in his office and passes away at age 56. He is the only coach in NCAA history to take three separate schools to the NCAA Tournament in his first year coaching the teams.
