- 1947 - Big happenings in pro basketball. The Pittsburgh Ironmen and the Toronto Huskies fold. Thy were members of the Basketball Association of America, the forerunner of today's NBA. Meanwhile, the American Basketball League's Baltimore Bullets join the BAA.
- 1976 - On the men's side, Team USA wins the gold medal at the Montreal Olympics, defeating Yugoslavia, 95-74. Adrian Dantley paces the winners with 30 points. On the women's side, the Soviet Union wins the first-ever Olympic women's basketball gold medal, going 5-0 in the round-robin tournament. Uljana Semjonova leads the Soviets, averaging 19.4 points and 12.4 rebounds a game, while sitting on the bench for mor than half of all games.
- 1992 - The Dream Team should be charged with a felony, as they are credited with an Olympics-record 32 steals against a strong Croatia team. The US wins, 103-70.
- 1993 - Reggie Lewis of the Boston Celtics suffers a cardiac arrest during a practice, collapses and subsequently dies.
- 1996 - Teresa Edwards dishes out 16 assists against Australia to set a record for a US woman at the Olympics.
- 1999 - Houston's Sheryl Swoopes (right) records the WNBA's first triple-double (14 points, 15 rebounds, 10 assists) against Detroit.
