- 1903 - Syracuse star Vic Hanson, the only player enshrined in both the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the College Football Hall of Fame, is born in Watertown, New York.
- 1970 - Big Apple favorite Chris Mullin is born in New York City, New York.
- 1970 - The American Basketball Association's Washington Caps relocate to Virginia and are renamed the Virginia Squires.
- 1980 - At the US-boycotted Moscow Olympics, the Yugoslavian men defeat Italy, 86-77, to win the gold medal. On the women's side, the Soviet Union wins its second Olympic gold medal, defeating Bulgaria, 104-73, and cruising through the tournament unchallenged.
- 2002 - Lisa Leslie of the Los Angeles Sparks throws down the first dunk (right) in WNBA history against the Miami Sol. In 2006 WNBA fans voted it the "Greatest Milestone in WNBA History."
