- 1917 - Hall of Famer Larry O'Brien, third commissioner of the National Basketball Association, is born in Springfield, Massachusetts.
- 1960 - Ralph Sampson, one of only two men to win the Naismith Award as National Collegiate Player of the Year three times, is born in Harrisonburg, Virginia.
- 1972 - WNBA and international star Lisa Leslie is born in Garedena, California.
- 1978 - The NBA approves a franchise swap in which Buffalo Braves owners John Y. Brown and Harry Mangurian acquire the Celtics, while Celtics owner Irv Levin acquires the Braves. Levin soon moves the Braves to San Diego and they become the Clippers.
- 2001 - Katie Smith (right) of the Minnesota Lynx sets the WNBA single-game scoring record with a 46-point performance, including six three-pointers, in a 100-95 overtime loss to Los Angeles.
- 2002 - The U.S. Virgin Islands defeat the Dominican Republic, 60-57, to capture the Caribbean Championship (CARICOM). It marks the second consecutive time that the two teams met for the championship with the same result on both occasions.
- 2007 - San Antonio Spurs and French national team star Tony Parker marries television star Eva Longoria in Paris, France.
