- 1981 - Center Raitis Grafs, formerly of the Valparaiso Crusaders, is born in Riga, Latvia.
- 1991 - The Chicago Bulls defeat the Los Angeles Lakers 108-101 at the Great Western Forum to capture the NBA Finals in five games.
- 1994 - Brazil defeats China, 96-84, to win the FIBA World Championship for Women. It marks the first time anyone other than the the United States or the Soviet Union has won the tournament.
- 1996 - Allen Iverson (right) signs a 10-year $50 million deal with Reebok after being drafted with the No. 1 overall pick by the Philadelphia 76ers.
